British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
