EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
