The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brasília.
The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and return him to office.
At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
