The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
